Yama's fascination for Japanese food culture began more than fifty years ago with Yuang Tsing Ma. The grandfather of Yama's current CEO Chih-Sung Ma, he became deeply enamoured with the Japanese culinary philosophy. Japanese cuisine is known for its dynamic combination of tradition and an ongoing quest for balance and perfection. The emphasis is on quality over cost.
Despite considerable resistance in the 1950s, Yuang Tsing kept pursuing his goal of introducing soy sauce in the Netherlands. He believed in the power of Japanese soy sauce to enchant dishes and make them taste even better.
After his son Jaap Ma took over the company in 1966, Yama expanded its opportunities by collaborating with partners in the food industry and renowned Dutch chefs. This coincided perfectly with the rise of an innovative Dutch gastronomy, with a greater focus on umami and authentic oriental flavours. In 1987, Chih-Sung Ma was the third generation to join the family business with great enthusiasm.
Today, Yama is so much more than soy sauce and umami. We are ‘Your silent partner in famous food'. Flavour is what makes food famous and that is exactly what we are constantly looking for. This ongoing quest has brought us a wealth of knowledge and experience. We love to share our insights and expertise with our customers in our own personal manner.
